We utilise TO for ( 31 to 59 minutes )
Class OF THE ANSWER :
It is …….. minutes past / to ……..
Examples:
- It is iv minutes to 8. ( 07:56 ) ( less formal: It is seven 50-6 )
- It is seven minutes by eleven. ( xi: 07 ) ( less formal: Information technology is xi O-seven ) (0 is pronounced like the alphabetic character"O" not "zero.")
- Information technology is nine minutes to three. ( 2:51) (less formal: It is l-ane)
Notes:
1. For multiplies of five, nosotros leave out the give-and-take 'minutes'
Examples:
- It is five to ten. ( 09:55 )
- It is twenty by eight. ( 08:xx )
- Is is twenty v to vii. ( 06:35 )
2. Nosotros can say also
- 'a guarter past…..' instead of 'fifteen past … ( 15 minutes by….)'
- 'a quarter to….' instead of 'fifteen to…. ( fifteen minutes to….)'
- 'half past…..' instead of 'thirty past….( 30 minutes past….)'
Examples:
- It is a guarter to 4 = Information technology is fifteen to four ( 03:45 )

iii. In American English language;
'After' is used instead of 'Past'
'Before' is used instead of 'To'
Examples:
- It is ten after ii. ( 02:10 )
- Information technology is a quater before five ( 04:45 )
- Information technology is viii earlier half dozen. ( 05:52 )
At that place are two common ways of telling the fourth dimension. We usually say the minutes first and and so The hours. However, We also say the hours first and then the minutes (Less formal).
Examples:
- ( 05:10 ) It is ten past five. ( minutes + Past / TO + hours )
- ( 05: 10 ) It is five ten. ( hours + minutes ) ( less formal )
Note 1: When proverb the time ' the hours commencement and then the minutes', 0 is pronounced like the letter"O" not "aught."
Examples:
- ( 06:04 ) It is vi 0-four = Information technology is iv minutes past six
- ( 07:09) It is vii 0-9 = It is nine minutes past to vii
Note 2: A o'clock has two easily. The curt manus shows hours and the long hand shows minutes.
A.Chiliad ( AM/ a.m / am ) and P.M ( PM/ p.m / pm )
Since the 24-hour fourth dimension zone is non used in English ( fourth dimension is expressed with 12-hour time zones in english) the hours must be divided into two;
'before noon' and 'after noon'.
For the hours before noon ( 00:01 – 12:00),nosotros utilise a.grand. (Ante meridiem)
For the hours afterwards noon ( 12:01 -24:00 ), nosotros employ p.m. (Post meridiem)
Examples:
- 02:00 am = It is two o'clock before noon
- 02:00 pm = Information technology is 2 o'clock after noon
- ( 2 am, 08:00 pm, 6 PM, three A.M, etc… )
Annotation : "a.grand." and "p.m." markers can not be used with "past / to"
The Times in English language
| Time | Hours |
|---|---|
| morning | 00:01 – xi:59 |
| noon or midday | 12:00 |
| afternoon | 12:01 – 18:00 |
| evening | 18:01 – 22:00 |
| night | 22:01 – 24:00 |
| midnight | 24:00 / 00:00 |
| a.m. – (the time between midnight and noon) | 00:01 – 12:00 |
| p.m. – (the time later noon ( not afternoon )) | 12:01 – 24:00 |
We can utilize dot or colon equally a seperator betwixt hours and minutes.
Nosotros utilize the structure "AT" with time when giving the fourth dimension of a specific event.
Examples:
